This book provides a detailed account of voters' attitudes to education as a political issue and the relationships between such attitudes, voting behaviour and political activity during the 1980s. It includes analysis of large scale national and local surveys, and smaller, more qualitative, case studies carried out by the author in two areas of Greater Manchester (already labelled as 'Torytown' and 'Labourville' in Edgell and Duke's Greater Manchester study). Contents are organised to follow a sequence, moving from the level of voters' interest in educational issues to the influence of public opinion on government policy. Attitude scales are developed and three theoretical positions are offered in an attempt to make sense of the diversity of attitudes and inevitable problems involved when definitions of reality are considered. Findings emphasise the constraints imposed on public knowledge by the ideological framework of educational debate.
