This book is a synthesis of theoretical insights and empirical research on some key issues pertaining to the economics of energy in agriculture. The purpose of the book is three-fold - to present a conceptual framework for the identification and analysis of energy requirements for agriculture; to examine the impacts of energy price increases and supply shortages on the structure of agriculture; and to explore the economic feasibility of agriculture as a renewable source of energy production. The book presents a substantial body of original research findings, including new information on energy intensity and factor substitution in agriculture. A series of case studies are included to supplement and enhance the discussion of major issues.
