In 1917, the last ship taking labourers from India to the sugar plantations of British Guiana sets sail, on board are Rampat and Parvati, a childless couple looking for a new future. During the journey, an illigimate child is born to a dying mother and Rampat and Parvati adopt her and call her Neela. Since her birth, Neela has been connected to the mystery of the sea godess Ganga, and 15 years later she is seen as human and divine, a destroyer and a saviour. Her story is told against a backdrop of slavery, family, racial conflict and religious superstition.
